AWARENESS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT IN BIOLOGY AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ILORIN METROPOLIS
Abstract
Sustainable development is a key goal in both national and international educational strategies, integral to human development globally. This study investigates the awareness of sustainable development concepts among secondary school biology students in Ilorin, Nigeria, within the context of biology education. The research employed a descriptive survey approach. Data were collected from 400 respondents, comprising 344 biology students and 56 biology teachers in Ilorin and analysed using percentage and mean. The results indicate a low level of awareness among students regarding sustainable development concepts in biology. Furthermore, the study explores the negative influence of biology teachers' educational value orientations on sustainable development awareness. The implications highlight concerns about the future generation's preparedness to address environmental challenges. Recommendations include the need for educational reforms and professional development initiatives for biology teachers to align their teaching practices with sustainable development principles.
