Abstract

The Philippine Normal University-North Luzon developed a responsive
teacher training program for indigenous communities. This qualitative
research identified nine key attributes for beginning teachers of indigenous
peoples (IP) and proposed a curriculum framework. These attributes include
understanding indigenous knowledge systems, cultural empathy, unity,
respect, communication, character strength, adaptability, expertise in IP
pedagogy, and cultural heritage knowledge. These are crucial for teacher
education in a country that recognizes indigenous rights.

Despite existing programs, indigenous education in the Philippines still faces
implementation challenges. Balancing modernity and cultural preservation
should be determined by the indigenous communities themselves, considering
the diverse needs of different ethnic groups. Additionally, involving culture
bearers in the education system can help preserve IP culture
